John 15
As I was sitting with the Lord, I felt what I could only describe as a top note of joy. When I asked the Lord what that meant, I got the sense that I should look it up. This is what I found: A top note is the first scent impression of a fragrance when it is initially applied to the skin. Read this article describing the structure of a fragrance.
As I sat with Him a bit longer, I heard the Spirit of the Lord say,
Live so that your top note is joy. Live so that you carry the fragrance of joy, and the first thing people sense when they meet you, encounter you or walk in your presence is joy. Pure joy. Do you know what that does for them? It stirs up joy in their own heart. It raises a holy jealousy for joy and produces joy. It is like a something unstable and uncertain looking for something stable to lock onto. It stirs up a holy hunger, a holy jealousy and it sets their heart to searching.
14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.15 For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16 to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? 17 For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.
2 Corinthians 2:14-17
Shine with the radiance of the sun, and watch as people are drawn to your light and warmth. Let joy be the top note. Let the brightness of your shining be the heart of the fragrance you carry. And let peace — deep abiding peace — be your base note, what stabilizes and grounds you and causes your presence to be weighty and solid. This is the fragrance My lovers should carry. This is the one that catches the attention of those who do not know Me, and it is a scent recognized by those who do. It’s a secret language amongst those who know and a tantalizing reality that opens before those who are not yet with Me. It presents them with a previously unknown possibility that stirs desire in their heart.
““I am the sprouting vine and you’re my branches. As you live in union with me as your source, fruitfulness will stream from within you—but when you live separated from me you are powerless. If a person is separated from me, he is discarded; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire to be burned. But if you live in life-union with me and if my words live powerfully within you—then you can ask whatever you desire and it will be done. When your lives bear abundant fruit, you demonstrate that you are my mature disciples who glorify my Father! “I love each of you with the same love that the Father loves me. You must continually let my love nourish your hearts. If you keep my commands, you will live in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands, for I continually live nourished and empowered by his love. My purpose for telling you these things is so that the joy that I experience will fill your hearts with overflowing gladness!”

The fragrance you carry is the essence of who you are. As your life is entwined with Me, your fragrance becomes holier. My fragrance is holy and weighty but also light and ethereal. My fragrance here is a taste of Heaven on Earth. Be holy, therefore as I Am holy. Entwine your life with Mine. Carry and live deeply abiding in My vine, and let My joy be your strength. Let My light radiate from your heart and countenance and permeate from your skin. Let My peace ground you, stabilize you and make you one who is unshifting. This is the fragrance of My lovers. It gets increasingly pure the closer you get to Me.
How to Respond
- Prioritize time in the presence of the Lord. Ask Him to cut away anything that is hindering you from carrying the fragrance of one who loves Him.
- Pray, Lord, show me how to live in a way that causes me to carry the fragrance of the ones who love You. Help me to get rid of anything I’m carrying that does not reflect You, Your holiness and Your glorious ways.
- Decree, I am entwined as one with the Lord, and I carry the fragrance of one who loves Him and who sits in His presence. I commit to carry a top note of joy, to have a heart that shines with His radiance and to have a base note of weighty, immovable peace.
